Outdoor Winter Activities to do in Denver

Are you new to Denver Colorado? Or maybe just visiting for the weekend? Or are you a resident looking to get out of your winter rut of the same activities every weekend? Well, no matter who you are, you’re in luck.

Denver is the perfect place to be when looking for things to do during the winter, thanks to its wide variety of activities. Whether you’re looking for some outdoor adventures or to go to the museum, Denver has got you covered.

To help you come up with some new ideas, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite things to do outdoors when the weather turns cold:

Skiing

It can seem like a bit of a no brainer to add skiing to our list of outdoor activities. But it’s a must have. Known for some of the best skiing in the U.S., Denver is the place to go when it comes to this winter activity.

If you’re looking for beginner runs and reasonable pricing, be sure to check out Echo Mountain. With only an hour drive, this resort holds the title of closest resort to the city. They may not have the tallest summit of the resorts around Denver, but that makes Echo Mountain great for those just starting out at the sport.

If you’re looking for more difficult terrain we suggest you check out Arapahoe Basin. While this resort is an hour and a half drive to get to, it’s definitely worth it for the more advanced skier. It’s one of the first to open in the fall and often doesn’t close until June. It may be a bit more expensive than the beginner slopes of Echo Mountain, but rest assured, the higher elevation makes up for it.

While we’ve only mentioned two of Denver’s many ski resorts, be sure to check out the others too. Denver has plenty more options only a small drive away.

Snowshoeing

If the thrill of downhill skiing isn’t for you, but you still want to get into those mountains, then we suggest some snowshoeing. While it can be a bit more tiring than hiking, it’s definitely worth the effort. And Denver has plenty of options for all skill levels.

If you’re a beginner or looking for a slightly easier hike, head on over to the Bear Lake Loop. This trail, located in Rocky Mountain National Park, is only a couple hours from Denver. It’s one of the most popular trails thanks to the amazing views. The loop is about .6 miles round trip and offers plenty of benches and resting places. You don’t want to miss out on the gorgeous peak view of this hike.

Are you looking for something a bit longer and more difficult? Then be sure to check out Mayflower Gulch. Depending on where you want to go will determine the length of the hike. Heading up to the scenic gulch to the old ghost town is a little over 3.5 miles. Then if you’re feeling adventurous, you can head up to the ridge which is just under 6 miles. The views are spectacular no matter which you choose to stop at.

Whatever hike you decide to take, the slower pace will allow you to experience winter and the stunning beauty Denver has to offer.

Ice Castles

These castles are in Dillon, Colorado, an hour and a half drive from the metro Denver area. But don’t let the drive intimidate you, this attraction is definitely worth it. The ice castles are made of magnificent sculptures, frozen thrones, ice-carved tunnels, slides, fountains, and so much more.

For the full effect, we recommend seeing it after dark, when the ice is lit with perfectly placed led-lighting. Don’t forget to buy your tickets early. The castles get quite busy and you don’t want to miss out on this adventure. Tickets are located here.

Snow Tubing

If you’re looking for a fun, family friendly activity to do this weekend, look no further. Snow tubing is simple to do and a great way to spend a day with the kids. Whether you’re looking for a break from skiing or trying a new adventure all together, this is a great place to start.

Denver offers several places, including Colorado Adventure Park. This locally owned and operated park has plenty to do between the tubing, double tubing, and mini-snowmobiles. Only a few from ski resorts and 70 miles from Denver. This is something you’ll want to spend your whole day doing.

Another great option is Hidden Valley located in Rocky Mountain National Park. While it used to be a downhill ski area, it has since been updated into a great sledding area. When the family gets cold and tired, you can head on over to Estes Park to warm up and get food. If you’re looking for a whole weekend adventure, Hidden Valley is the place to go.

Ice Skating

Looking to stay a little closer to home this weekend but still want to get out of the house? Then search no further. Downtown Denver Ice Rink at Skyline Park and The Rink at Belmar are the perfect places to go.

At the Downtown Denver Ice Rink, you’ll get DJs on Friday nights, a Sunday family day, and much more throughout the season. And when you’re done skating, it’s only a short walk away from some great dinner spots. The Rink at Belmar has plenty of things to do throughout their season as well. From an ugly sweater party to a New Year’s Eve party.

Whichever option you choose between these two great rinks, you’re going to need to check availability at these locations, as they close earlier in the season than other ice rinks further outside of the city.

With all of these options listed, don’t forget to check out their websites for more information.
